Double Bass Shelf / T1.20
2020年コレクションライン「Play」
The body is a Cremona-made double bass from a domestic manufacturer (now defunct). The year of manufacture couldn’t be confirmed, but it was made of plywood. While plywood double basses are by no means expensive, Cremona is known as a manufacturer whose instruments, being domestic, feel meticulously crafted with the soul of the artisan. In the condition it was acquired (as seen in the making video), the neck was detached and the body was peeling, making restoring it to functional instrument status seem rather difficult. Yet its beautiful presence radiated an aura too compelling to discard. We contemplated how to preserve this instrument—which had enchanted us with its deep, resonant bass tones—within our lives, or perhaps give it new life. We chose to retain its heavy, industrial impression, transforming it into a functional shelf that decorates the space. Fitted with Japanese Sugatsune sliding rails, opening it reveals a three-tiered shelf system. The bottom shelf is designed for long bottles, the middle for small bottles, and the top primarily for glasses. The stand features solid wood with an iron backrest and Japan Blue Company’sエンジ色 fabric. If desired, it can be used with pegs and strings, potentially achieving a more authentic finish. While damaged sections of the large body were relocated and repaired from areas hidden internally, only minimal repairs were performed to preserve its aged character.
